WHERE?
UNC – Chapel Hill’s Kenan Stadium

WHY?
To experience the fun of being in a college band.

HOW?
By performing with the UNC Marching Tar Heels!

All current high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to participate in the 2023 UNC Marching Tar Heels Honors Marching Band and join the UNC Marching Tar Heels for the November 4 football game against Campbell in Kenan Stadium.  Participants will be provided parking (1 permit per participant), transportation between the parking lot and campus, a pregame meal with the Marching Tar Heels, a game ticket, cap, and the chance to experience game day with the Marching Tar Heels.  Particpants will be matched with a member of the Marching Tar Heels for the entire game day, including a pregame rehearsal, game day meal, march to the stadium, performance in the stands during the game, and a performance on the field at halftime of the football game.

Every student must have an adult accompany them to the Honors Band event.  Participants may attend this event with family members.  Groups of students from the same high school are welcome to participate but they must register (and pay) as individuals.  This experience is not designed for everyone in a high school marching band; rather it is designed for those students who are sincerely interested in finding out more about UNC-Chapel Hill, the Marching Tar Heels and/or college marching bands in general.

Family members accompanying the participants will receive transportation between the parking lot and campus, a pregame meal with the Marching Tar Heels, and a game ticket.  All family member seats will be in a reserved section, relatively near the participating students.

Game time will be announced at least one week before the game and hopefully two weeks before the game.  Once game time is announced all registered participants will be sent the actual game day schedule.  For planning purposes, this is a sample schedule.

5 hours before kick-off – meet in parking lot for shuttle to campus
4.5 hours before kick-off –  welcome / warm-up / rehearse with the Marching Tar Heels

3.0 hours before kick-off – pregame meal in Lenoir
2 hours before kick-off – perform in Tar Heel Town for team arrival
1 hours before kick-off – march to Kenan Stadium with the UNC Marching Tar Heels
20 minutes before kick-off – pregame performance by the Marching Tar Heels (you will be on the field!)
halftime – performance by UNC Honors Marching Band and the Marching Tar Heels
postgame – return to parking lot (shuttles will start running after halftime)

Cost for participants will be $30 each and accompanying family members will be charged $50.  Band directors who wish to attend will not be charged.

So that every participant may have the best experience possible, we ask that everyone comes to the event prepared to play the music that will be used during the halftime performance (no memorization necessary).  Participants will be required to wear their school’s marching uniform (with the cap provided) during the entire experience and everyone will be responsible for providing their own instrument/flag.  Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate front ensemble instruments.

Feel free to call the UNC Band office at 919-962-5695 if you have questions and/or concerns.  Questions may also be sent via email using the link on www.uncbands.org.  Please direct your inquiry to Jeffrey Fuchs by selecting his name from the drop-down options.

We are excited to offer this Honor Band opportunity and look forward to meeting high school students who are interested in UNC, the Marching Tar Heels and college bands in general.  GO HEELS!
